Company history

British Sugar (Overseas) has been present in Poland since 1989. As a result of joint venture with “Cukrownie Toruńskie”, Rolimpex and British Sugar (Overseas) a new company called SugarPol (Toruń) sp. z o.o. was created with British Sugar (Overseas) having 51% majority shareholding. This comprised of two factories Unisław and Ostrowite. In 1994 SugarPol acquired a third factory called Świecie.

In 1997 BSO Polska acquired a controlling interest in Sugar Factory Glinojeck SA, and followed that by underwriting Glinojeck’s share acquisition of two neighbouring factories Michałów (80,6 %) and Ciechanów (81,8 %) in 1998. Subsequent restructuring of the enlarged group has seen Glinojeck SA become the largest sugar factory in Poland in terms in its daily beet slice and annual production, which in year 2002 was above 100,000 tonnes of sugar.

In year 2000 BSO Polska acquired an additional four factories from Danisco and Rolimpex, forming the SugarTor company.

From 2005 to 2006 British Sugar spent around 170 million PLN expanding and modernising the plant, making it one of the biggest and the most modern factory in Central and Easter Europe with a beet throughout exceeding 11,500 tonnes per day and annual sugar production capacity over 150 thousand tonnes.
